What’s the connection between the fictional city of R’lyeh, Space Communication and Storytelling?
They’re all connected to Media Activities for the modern-day Space Race. In fact, R’lyeh is quite close to Point Nemo, the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility, also known as the ‘Spacecraft Cemetery.’ Funnily enough, in a case of Life imitating art, the former was placed on the map long before the latter’s status was proven.

- With Space Industries, we have a chance to get things ‘right’ from the start, ensuring equal opportunities, equitable growth and diversity, learning from the mistakes of the past.
- Crisis Communication for Space has overlaps with Disaster Management activities on Earth. Depending on the scale of the problem and its potential impact, tonality can range from transparency, to tongue-in-cheek humor.
- We’re not leaving this planet anytime soon (Sorry, no Worldships and Interstellar Arks yet), but we can use the developments in space to improve the QOL on earth, aid sustainability efforts and study the impact and the patterns of the Climate Crisis.
This may not sound as glamorous as terraforming Mars, but with current tech, the earliest estimate to achieve such a feat would be a hundred thousand years, far more than the span of recorded human history. Instead, it is far easier to save Earth and work towards more practical and sustainable solutions.
With the launch of Blue Origin and Virgin’s rocket recently, Space as an industry has gotten more limelight in the last week than in a long time. But these aren’t the only players in the zone. There are many others who have turned their vision towards the stars, with businesses ranging from Infrastructure for Space to Space Communication, to Space Technologies (ranging from the obvious to the far lesser known).
For humanity, the cosmos are just opening up.
